Recently deceased couple Adam and Barbara Maitland (Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis) find themselves trapped as ghosts inside their idyllic Connecticut country home, struggling to adapt to the afterlife.
Their peaceful haunt is thrown into chaos when a obnoxious, pretentious New York family moves in and begins remodeling the house into an avant-garde nightmare.
Desperate to scare the insufferable intruders away, the Maitlands ignore the warnings of their afterlife caseworker and summon Betelgeuse (Michael Keaton), an unhinged, freelance “bio-exorcist” demon whose chaotic, anarchic tricks quickly spiral completely out of control.
Tim Burton directs a groundbreaking dark comedy classic that defined his signature gothic-whimsical visual style, brought to life by Danny Elfman’s iconic score and a wildly kinetic lead performance from Michael Keaton. A massive box-office success and cultural landmark, the film won the Academy Award for Best Makeup, swept three Saturn Awards including Best Horror Film, and earned BAFTA nominations for Best Makeup and Best Special Visual Effects.
From the famous Harry Belafonte “Day-O” dinner table possession to the surreal, distorted landscapes of the afterlife waiting room, this 80s favorite remains an absolute triumph of imaginative filmmaking.
