Directed by Kulikar Sotho, The Last Reel (2014) is a poignant Cambodian drama that explores the enduring scars of history, the bonds of family, and the restorative magic of cinema.
Set in contemporary Phnom Penh, the story follows Sophoun, a rebellious young woman fleeing an arranged marriage pressed upon her by her tyrannical military father. Seeking shelter in a dilapidated old movie theater, she discovers an unfinished 1970s romantic film and realizes to her shock that the leading lady is her now-ill and traumatized mother.
The film’s final reel was destroyed during the rise of the Khmer Rouge—a brutal regime that decimated Cambodia’s thriving film industry and cost millions of lives, including those of countless artists. Driven by a desire to reconnect with her mother’s buried past and heal her broken family, Sophoun resolves to remake the missing ending herself. With the help of the theater’s aging projectionist, she sets out to shoot the climax, unintentionally unraveling deeply buried secrets, betrayals, and dark truths about her parents’ choices during the country’s reign of terror.
Anchored by a compelling performance from Ma Rynet and featuring legendary real-life pre-war Cambodian film star Dy Saveth, The Last Reel acts as a powerful bridge between generations.
It is both an intimate family melodrama and a national allegory, confronting the lingering trauma of genocide while honoring the lost “Golden Age” of Khmer cinema.
